A Houston Public Works crew is repairing a water leak that caused deep potholes on Frey Road and Elton Street, officials said

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A water leak in southeast Houston has caused a major problem after neighbors say a hole has formed at Frey Road and Elton Street.

Neighbors told ABC13 that at least two cars drove straight into it during their commute Monday morning.

A team of construction workers were on site on Monday afternoon as repairs were now underway after construction workers encountered a large leak that caused a much larger problem.

Neighbors told ABC13 that parts of the street began to collapse, causing concern among residents there.

“We were just driving around minding our own business and it scared me because you can't imagine just driving down the road and falling into a big hole,” Andreina Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez was one of at least two drivers who got stuck in a hole in the road Monday morning that looks like a small puddle from the surface but is much deeper.

“The city doesn’t want to help, or they said they couldn’t help and it was a city problem. The road is now faulty because the pipeline is broken,” Rodriguez said.

The city said it increased the request for repairs at that site after infrastructure concerns emerged.

Public works officials said they received the first call about the leak Thursday and sent inspectors the same day to investigate what repairs were needed.

“(Sunday) there was no hole collapse, but I guess it happened this morning or night,” said Christy Avalos, who has lived along the road for three decades and said it happened.

It is unclear how long the repairs will take.

Houston Public Works told ABC13 they are trying not to impact the entire neighborhood, but will have to shut off water to part of the area to make repairs.

“They do touch-ups, but maybe they give it a month and then it starts messing up again,” Avalos said.

She hopes things will be different this time.
