According to FOX 2 Detroit, the girls' parents left them at home around 11:15 a.m. that day and the older sister had to babysit. Detective Zachary DiGiacomo said the argument stemmed from “a note posted in the bathroom” about “the toilet flushing,” the outlet reported.

He said the victim – who was reportedly stabbed multiple times with a butcher knife and a hunting knife – had “over ten stab wounds from his stomach to his head to his neck,” FOX 2 Detroit explained.

“All I can say is it’s shocking and very tragic,” the official added, according to the outlet.

DiGiacomo did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

According to WXYZ, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the 13-year-old will not be tried as an adult in the case and will remain in the juvenile system due to her age.

“The state would have seven years until her mandatory release at age 21 to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate her. Hopefully then she wouldn't pose a danger to others. While this is a difficult decision given these facts, it is the right decision in this case,” Worthy said, according to the outlet.

“There is absolutely no doubt that the facts in this case are terrible. “It is beyond disturbing that the suspect responsible for the stabbing death of her seven-year-old sister is thirteen years old,” Wayne also said, according to CBS Detroit.
