Georgia murder suspect arrested at Upstate New York College

A student enrolled at a college in upstate New York has been arrested on murder charges after a lengthy investigation.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced earlier this month the arrest of a fugitive wanted for murder in the state of Georgia. This arrest resulted from information provided to the Broome County Sheriff's Office that 21-year-old Dawensley Astrel of Binghamton had an active warrant out of the Peach State.

After receiving the warrant, Broome County Sheriff's Office deputies set about locating the person, and officers said they learned Astrel was a student at SUNY Broome County Community College. The Broome County Sheriff's Office said its team coordinated with college officials and campus security officials to apprehend the fugitive.

According to Broome County Sheriff Fred Ashkar, Astrel was arrested on campus without incident on Monday, September 16, 2024. Sheriff Ashkar said:

Continued outstanding police work by our Warrant Division to bring this wanted individual to justice. Thank you to SUNY Broome's campus security team for working together to safely remove this fugitive from their campus.

Astrel is extradited by law enforcement to Georgia to answer his charges. Despite all the publicity and news surrounding his arrest, there is little to no information about the murder for which Astrel was arrested. Even Sheriff Ashkar limited himself to the information provided regarding the incident for which Astrel was arrested.

University officials told Fox News Digital that Astrel was enrolled as a part-time student and lived off campus.
