Police chase ends in fatal crash in Racine County

One person is dead after a chase involving Racine police officers ended with the driver crashing into a tree. According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, just after 9 p.m., Racine police attempted to stop a vehicle that had previously been involved in a hit-and-run. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and officers initiated a chase. The driver then crashed into a tree at a high rate of speed near the intersection of 4 Mile Road and Main Street in the Village of Caledonia, according to a DOJ press release at the scene. In accordance with agency policy, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading this death investigation and is assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, the Village of Caledonia Police Department, the Racine County Coroner's Office and a DCI crime prevention specialist. According to the Justice Department, the investigation into the crash is ongoing.

One person is dead after a chase with Racine police officers ended with the driver crashing into a tree.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Racine police attempted to stop a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run just after 9 p.m. Monday.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and officers initiated a pursuit. According to a DOJ news release, the driver then crashed into a tree at a high rate of speed near the intersection of 4 Mile Road and Main Street in the Village of Caledonia.

The press release said officers initiated life-saving measures, but the driver died at the scene.

In accordance with agency policy, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.

The Criminal Investigation Division is leading this death investigation and is assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, the Village of Caledonia Police Department, the Racine County Medical Examiner's Office and a DCI Crime Response Specialist.

The DOJ says the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
