Cameron County deputy constable killed in car accident

Just a minute? Instead, listen

A Cameron County Precinct 1 deputy was struck and killed while assisting with another accident Monday evening.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the crash occurred around 6:45 a.m. on State Highway 48 and Marine Way Road and resulted in the death of Ruben Garcia, a Brownsville resident and deputy trooper.

According to the news release, Garcia was parked in a marked patrol unit when a white Chevrolet Silverado crashed behind the unit.

DPS did not immediately identify the driver, but said he admitted to being distracted while looking at her phone. Police believe the driver was under the influence of alcohol and a blood warrant was obtained.

On Facebook, Cameron County Precinct 5 sent its thoughts and prayers to Garcia's family, friends and colleagues.

“May they find strength during this incredibly difficult time,” the post reads. “We are eternally grateful for the sacrifices made in the line of duty to ensure the safety of our community.”
