The Letcher County sheriff is resigning after being charged with the murder of a county judge

In a surprise move, Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines resigned from his position on Monday, calling the move — despite facing charges — a resignation rather than a resignation.

“The decision allows a successor to step in and serve the community during this difficult time,” said his attorney, Kerri Bartley.

Stines was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on suspicion of shooting District Judge Kevin Mullins in his chambers. According to a statement from Kentucky State Police, the shooting occurred after an argument between the two celebrities.

Judge Mullins, 54, who served on the bench for 15 years, died at the scene. Sheriff Stines, 43, surrendered without incident and now faces charges that have sent shockwaves through residents.

“It's just so sad. I just hate it,” said Letcher County Clerk Mike Watts. “Both are friends of mine. I’ve been working with both of them for years.”

The investigation is still ongoing and there is little clarity as to what sparked the dispute. But the sheriff was deposed earlier this week in connection with a lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct involving a deputy and the courthouse.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear had publicly called on Stines to resign, citing the need for an active sheriff for public safety. Letcher County's chief judge will now fill the vacancy left by these events with a new appointment as sheriff.
