Update from the Rockwall County Sheriff's Office regarding a traffic stop – Blue Ribbon News

Rockwall, TX (October 1, 2024) – A Rockwall County sheriff's deputy was uninjured last night after he was shot in the High Point Lake Estates neighborhood of Rockwall County.

This incident occurred when the deputy attempted to stop a vehicle with a concealed paper tag, but was unable to stop the vehicle. The vehicle led the officer to a neighborhood where a passenger fired several shots. At least one bullet struck the bumper of the deputy's vehicle. The vehicle left the neighborhood and continued north on FM 548. Near State Highway 276, the passenger jumped out of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle continued to flee north on FM 548 and crashed near the intersection of FM 548 and I-30. The driver did not exit the vehicle when ordered by officers. After determining the driver was no longer moving, officers approached and was removed from the vehicle.

The driver was treated at the scene and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The passenger who jumped out of the vehicle was found covered in blood and injured by paramedics. The passenger was transported for medical treatment.

Cash and a gun were found in the vehicle.

The positive identification of the driver and passenger is still being determined. The investigation is ongoing.
