WhatsApp introduces new filters and backgrounds for video calls

WhatsApp announced another update for its users on Tuesday. This time, the messaging platform is introducing new camera filters and backgrounds that can be used during video calls. Read on as we detail how WhatsApp's new effects work.

WhatsApp adds new camera effects for video calls

According to WhatsApp, the new filters make video calls “more interesting” by giving them a “personal touch.” Of course, users can also enable backgrounds to hide their surroundings.

“Filters are designed to help you create a more playful atmosphere, whether by adding a splash of color or creating a more artistic atmosphere for your video. “Backgrounds allow you to keep your surroundings private and transport yourself to a cozy cafe or cozy living room for a cleaner and more elegant look,” the company said in a statement 9to5Mac.

With 20 effect options, you can create unique looks by selecting and mixing options. Filters include Warm, Cool, Black and White, Light Leak, Dreamy, Prism Light, Fisheye, Vintage TV, Frosted Glass and Duo Tone. Backgrounds include Blur, Living Room, Office, Cafe, Pebbles, Foodie, Smoosh, Beach, Sunset, Celebration and Forest.

Additionally, the update also adds the ability to customize the appearance and brightness of the environment displayed on the camera. Users can find the new effects by tapping the new icon at the top right of the screen during an individual or group video call.

A few weeks ago, WhatsApp also announced improvements to the channel function. With the update, users can now find new channels to follow by category. These categories include people, organizations, lifestyle, sports, entertainment, business, and news and information.

WhatsApp for iPhone and Mac is available for free in the App Store.
