Six dead and ten injured in shooting and stabbing attack in the Israeli city of Jaffa | Israel

Six people were killed and 10 injured in a shooting and stabbing attack on the Israeli coastal city of Jaffa, just minutes before Iran launched a huge rocket attack on Israel. Five of the wounded appeared to be in serious condition.

CCTV footage showed two men dressed in black, reportedly armed with an assault rifle and a knife, getting off a train near the Jerusalem Boulevard light rail station and opening fire on passers-by and on a second nearby street.

Videos after the attack showed several bodies slumped under the station's awning. An image shared on social media purported to show the men executing a wounded man while lying on the ground.

According to one report, the attackers shot and stabbed Tel Aviv light rail passengers before moving on foot and attacking people on Jerusalem Boulevard.

Two gunmen involved in the attack were killed by security forces while police searched for a suspected third gunman and cordoned off surrounding buildings. The two dead attackers were reportedly from Jaffa and the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Israel Emergency Services said it received a report of people injured by gunfire at 7:01 p.m. Paramedics and paramedics at the scene treated a number of injured people with varying degrees of severity, including some who were unconscious, paramedics said.

Earlier reports suggested eight people had been killed, but police later revised the figure to six.

Witnesses described the shooting to the Israeli media. “We were on the light rail when we suddenly heard gunshots coming from outside,” a witness told The Jerusalem Post.

“At first we thought it was fireworks, but then we realized it was something much worse. There were a lot of shots. We fell to the ground and people were crying. I saw someone bleeding on the ground.”

“I saw crowds of people running and shouting 'terrorist attack,'” a nearby shopkeeper added. “I quickly closed my shutters and locked them.”

Haaretz cited several other witnesses. “I saw a terrorist shoot a girl who was lying on the ground and another girl, then I saw the terrorist shoot a man on a bike who fell to the ground, but I don't think he didn't was injured. At that moment, a civilian came with a gun and shot the terrorist.”

Another witness who attended the synagogue said he heard shots from an automatic weapon. “Among the believers were paramedics who work voluntarily with the MDA [emergency response services]. We treated a man who was wounded in the synagogue and then ran into the street to help other wounded people,” he said.

The Jewish High Holidays begin on Wednesday with Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year – and end on October 11, Yom Kippur. Israel was already on high alert amid conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon and rapidly growing tensions with Iran that have pushed the countries into the age of all-out war.

Video footage after the attack showed one of the two gunmen lying dead in the street, surrounded by security forces, as he questioned whether the shooting had been coordinated in some way to coincide with the Iranian missile attacks.

The shooting is the latest in a series of attacks that have taken place in Israel since October, both in the densely populated central region and in more sparsely populated areas.
