San Francisco firefighters said some residents in the Bret Harte neighborhood may need to evacuate or seek shelter due to a reported gas leak.

The fire department said emergency crews and police were knocking on doors south of Paul Avenue, between Crane and Carr streets, to let residents know if they should temporarily move.

According to the fire department, a construction crew damaged a natural gas pipeline in the area.

The fire department said the evacuations were a precautionary measure and SF Muni buses were sent to the area to act as cooling centers for displaced residents.
