Earlier this football season, Homewood High School band drummer Jack Mitchell performed his drum line routine while spinning in a giant neon gyroscope.

The video has since gone viral on TikTok, receiving over 8 million views and 500,000 likes to date.

We spoke to Jack and Homewood band director Chris Cooper about how this incredible stunt came about.

The idea for this amazing stunt came from Homewood band director Chris Cooper, who had seen the concept before and wanted to see if he could do it better.

“Last October someone in Mississippi had this gyroscope for sale and I just went.I want it.'

My dad and I drove to Jackson, MS and purchased it. I didn’t tell my staff, I didn’t tell my assistant director, I didn’t tell my drum teacher – I just showed up with it.”

Don't worry – he assured us that the drum kit was fully strapped and secured before the students entered.

According to Cooper, he knew Jack Mitchell had to be the star when he came up with the idea.

“There's something about Jack that I just knew he was the right guy for. He is the boy who made the magic possible.

We didn’t even have a tryout.”
