Murder In A Small Town's Kristin Kreuk and Rossif Sutherland promised a "different" kind of crime series, and after episode 2, I get it

Murder in a small town had a stellar start to its 2024 TV schedule with a 90-minute premiere event, and “Fall From Grace” was the first episode of the new crime drama to fit into the one-hour time slot on Fox. While the premiere made it clear enough that the series starring Kristin Kreuk and Rossif Sutherland wasn't going to be just another whodunit, and cleverly avoided the frustrations of a will-they/won't-they dynamic, I wasn't entirely convinced This is a completely different type of series than the stars that CinemaBlend previewed. Well, “Fall From Grace” changed my mind!

Graduates from the local Gibsons High School flocked to town in Fall From Grace for a reunion event open to former students of all ages, which of course included Cassandra (Kreuk). She had already committed to attending and persuaded Alberg (Sutherland) to be her date, but the celebrations took a criminal turn when a man was murdered after an affair was discovered. The duties of his job interfered with their romantic evening, but the case was ultimately closed and Cassandra accepted Alberg's apology.

And it was the banter between Cassandra and Alberg in their school reunion/prom date scenes together that really sold me on the sets Murder in a small town apart from other series in the crime genre. The episode (which will be available to stream with a Hulu subscription) didn't feel like it would involve Cassandra in this week's case, but Cassandra is definitely not just a main character's love interest. These are two very different characters with largely separate lives who choose each other, and you don't see that on film NCIS or law and order.

Seeing what Cassandra and Alberg are like in a regular episode as opposed to a premiere made me think back to the time I talked to the two stars about everything from their soulmate characters to why Sutherland wasn't originally interested was interested in joining the series. I had asked what they would say Murder in a small town apart from other crime series, and Kreuk replied:

Our series is of course, as you said, a crime series. By and large, there is a crime in an episode and the characters in the cast are cops who solve the crimes, but that's not the point of the series. The show is different and it's about the relationship. I play a librarian who is not involved in the crimes, and so there is a pulse, a heartbeat, between the characters. And the city itself is also an important part of the series.

Having watched many crime shows over the years and planning to watch many of them on television this fall, part of me just assumed that the crimes of the week would somehow always require Alberg to consult the local librarian, Cassandra, to find the key to solving the case, but the second episode really made it clear that everyone can anchor their own stories as co-leads. The former Smallville Actor continued:

Sometimes I feel like criminal procedurals are satisfying and that they're rooted in the plot, that they're really figuring it out and the satisfaction of finding the solution is wonderful. But on our show we also live in the relationship and a love story that really comes from the heart, and I honestly hope, between these two characters in their 40s.

Crime films are extremely successful as a genre; The law and order The franchise alone dates back almost 35 years and has included seven different shows, and that's just one example. As Law & Order: SVU And Organized crime Fans who have been hoping for the main characters to get back together since 1999 can attest that relationships are rarely the focus of a standard crime series. That is not the case with us Murder in a small town. Rossif Sutherland also commented on the special features of the new Fox series:

This is the kind of show where the entire crew, all of us, had to move. They always say the crews become families, but we all lived in the same home, made this new place our home, came to work every day and looked forward to bringing this to life. It was a very special experience and many friendships were formed. And I think a lot of what's ultimately on screen happened when the camera wasn't rolling, and that was a very special experience for a lot of people.

Murder in a small town Of course, the series is not set in a huge city like New York, Los Angeles or Washington, DC and is therefore fundamentally different from other series. It remains to be seen whether the series can hold up by packing so much crime into such an idyllic small town, but I'm optimistic after the last episode. Plus, the next episode brings with it an alumnus of another crime series that focuses on two main characters: Stana Katic from Lock Fame. Check out the promo:
