Traffic stop in Covington leads to drug bust

Walter Johnson (Newton County Sheriff's Office)

A Covington man was arrested on multiple drug charges following a traffic stop by the Newton County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Division.

Walter Johnson, 50, was arrested after officers said they found 90 grams of methamphetamine in his possession. In addition to the methamphetamine, Johnson was in possession of Schedule I narcotics, which led to three additional charges, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for a residence on Highway 162 South. During the execution of the warrant, which was conducted by SID in conjunction with the NCSO Uniform Patrol Division, authorities discovered additional evidence of drug trafficking. Items found included scales, bags and trafficking in methamphetamine and cocaine, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Ezell Brown praised the investigative team and said: “This arrest is the result of our tireless efforts to remove dangerous drugs from the streets and hold those who distribute them accountable. The safety of our Newton County community remains our top priority.”

Johnson was charged with trafficking methamphetamine and cocaine and three counts of possession of Schedule I narcotics. He was booked into the Newton County Detention Center.
