IDF commanders approve Northern Command operational plans and training.

(JNS) US government revelations are endangering Israeli troops ahead of an impending ground invasion of Lebanon, an anonymous senior Israeli official told Kan News, Israel's public broadcaster, on Tuesday.

“We didn't like it. It is clear to us that the United States is concerned – and that is why it is trying to prevent this problem with “tricks,” the official said.

The Biden administration has sent mixed messages about an Israeli invasion. The White House said on Monday Israel had the right to defend itself against Hezbollah but warned against a ground operation that would lead to “mission creep” and long-term conflict.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant on Monday that the US is supporting Israel's limited ground operations. On the same day, a senior US official reportedly said that the US rejected Israel's idea of ”escalation leading to de-escalation.”

“We do not believe that a ground invasion of Lebanon will help ease tensions,” the senior official said.

When US President Joe Biden was asked by the press on Monday whether he was happy with an impending Israeli ground invasion, he said: “I agree with them stopping. We should have a ceasefire now.”

The president has repeatedly expressed concern that the hostilities could lead to a regional war.

Israeli officials told the United States that the planned operation would not last long and would be limited in scope, with Israeli forces conducting “local and targeted raids” along the border.

“These targets are located in villages near the border and pose an immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel,” the Israel Defense Forces said, adding that the troops would be supported by air and artillery support.

The IDF announced the start of the ground operation early Tuesday, hours after the security cabinet in Jerusalem approved the move.

It is the first time since 2006, the Second Lebanon War, that Israeli troops have invaded Lebanon.

IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told the foreign press on Monday evening: “We will not allow October 7 to be repeated at any of our borders.” We will continue to do everything necessary to ensure that Israeli families return to their homes safely and securely can.”
