Fiber failure blamed for loss of Lowcountry Xfinity service

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Xfinity says its customers in the Charleston area may experience a service outage due to a fiber optic outage.

Xfinity spokeswoman Amanda Verdin said Tuesday evening that teams were working diligently to get customers back online as quickly as possible.

It is not clear where the fiber cutting took place.

The company's outage map estimates that a few thousand customers in the West Ashley, Downtown Charleston, North Charleston, James Island and Mount Pleasant areas will be affected by an outage. For a block of outages, the estimated restoration time is 11:25 p.m. on Tuesday. “Network damage” was cited as the cause.

However, a second block of outages assumes service will not be restored until 7:05 p.m. Friday, citing “severe weather” as the cause.

Push notifications the company sent to some state teams in the West Ashley area were working to resolve the issue by about 4:50 a.m. Wednesday.

It's not clear how widespread the outage is.

The website Downdetector has seen an increase in reported outages since around 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday. Most complaints concern internet services, the website says.
