The MIT entrance exam paper for 1869-1870 goes viral, the internet thinks it's too easy

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the world's best-known and most respected engineering, mathematics and science institute. Since its founding nearly 200 years ago in 1861, the Institute has had more than 101 Nobel Prize winners and eight Fields Medalists as teachers or graduates in the United States.

The school is highly selective, with an admission rate of just 4%, meaning only a small number of those who apply are admitted. Since numerous rounds of eligibility must be completed, an applicant must demonstrate exceptional grades, extracurricular activities, essays and letters of reference.

Even after all this, admission to one of the world's leading institutionss is not guaranteed. But now a Reddit post with a questionnaire for the elite college entrance exam has gone viral.

The examination paper dates from June 1869, eight years after the institute was founded. According to an MIT alumni website, the first class of students who enrolled in 1865 were not required to take formal entrance tests. They just had to be “properly prepared.”

However, an entrance exam was later introduced. The test labeled “Massachusetts Institute of Technology” at the top indicates the algebra section of the questionnaire. The original test was intended to include three to four additional components covering geometry, arithmetic, English, and calculus.
