WhatsApp adds filters and backgrounds for video calls

Video calls on WhatsApp will soon be a little more fun. The messaging platform announced Tuesday that it is adding filters and backgrounds to video chats.

In the coming weeks, WhatsApp will make 10 filters and 10 backgrounds available to its Android and iOS users worldwide. You can access these options in both 1:1 and group video calls by tapping the Effects icon in the top right of the screen.

Filter options include Warm, Cool, Black and White, Light Leak, Dreamy, Prism Light, Fisheye, Vintage TV, Frosted Glass and Duo Tone, and background options include Blur, Living Room, Office, Cafe, Pebbles, Foodie, Smoosh, Beach, Sunset, Celebration and forest. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, shared some examples on his WhatsApp channel.

In addition to filters and backgrounds, WhatsApp offers two other new features for video calls: Touch Up and Low Light. These options can improve the appearance and brightness of the environment and make video call recordings look more elegant.

The Meta-owned platform hasn't announced a specific launch date for these features, but they will be available to everyone “in the coming weeks.” Keeping your app updated ensures you get the new features when it launches.

WhatsApp wallpapers may be Meta's latest attempt to keep the app fresh and competitive with other messaging apps like Facebook Messenger and Instagram. All three apps offer voice and video calls as well as AI-powered features and group chats.
