ARRIVE. This is WLWT-News 5 leading the way. Here at 12 p.m., CINCINNATI and the world of sports first remember the memory of Pete Rose, who died last night at the age of 83 at his home in Las Vegas. THANK YOU FOR JOINING. I'm STEVEN ALBRITTON and I'm KELLY RIPPIN. A MONUMENT TO THE REDS LEGEND THAT GROWS AT THE GREAT AMERICAN BASEBALL PARK TODAY. AND THERE WE FIND WLWT NEWS FIVE REPORTER BRIAN HAMRICK EXPLAINING ROSE'S LEGACY AND TALKING TO HIS FANS. BRIAN. YES. KELLY. WHAT WAS THE SURPRISE? I think that for many people this is a symbol of the city. THE CITY OF CINCINNATI, NOT UNLIKE FOUNTAIN SQUARE OR CAREW TOWER. He meant so much to this city. It's really hard to overstate this. HIS FANS WERE A LOT OF HIS FRIENDS DOWN HERE TODAY, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE BASEBALL STADIUM. You can see that there are people here right now. THERE HAVE REALLY BEEN PEOPLE HERE SINCE THE NEWS OF PETE ROSE'S DEATH AT 83 YEARS OLD BECAME. You know, he was an All-Star 17 times. HE HAD. 4256 HITS IN HIS BASEBALL CAREER. THEY HAVE A WALL IN THE HALL OF FAME WHERE PETE ROSE IS IN THE CINCINNATI REDS HALL OF FAME. And there are stories that when stacked about three stories on top of each other, they make ten yards of baseball. It's a huge display that shows how many hits there are throughout his career. HE HAD THE MOST AT BATS, THE MOST SEASONS WITH 200 HITS, THREE WORLD SERIES TITLES, TWO OF THEM WITH THE REDS. You know, and the people here, a lot of people that are here that you see come here as opposed to, you know, a famous baseball player or a great baseball player or some great athlete. This is a great athlete who was not only arguably the best player in baseball, but also played in his hometown in front of people who knew him best. And I think that's what made Pete Rose special in this city. And you know, he was banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling. IT'S ALL PART OF HIS LEGACY. IT'S ALL PART OF THE VERY COMPLEX CHARACTER THAT PETE ROSE WAS. And you know, his fans understand that in a way that maybe a lot of people who don't live here in CINCINNATI wouldn't understand. We recently spoke to one of them. I grew up a Cincinnati fan. I think he was just part of the fabric, right? He was just one of us. One of the cities and the city could live through Pete in many ways. AND SEE YOURSELF IN PETE ON THE FIELD AND BE VERY PROUD OF IT. That's why I believe that despite all his ups and downs, he was one of us. And I was proud of it. Yes, and we've heard that from a lot of people out here. You know, I was just talking to a guy who grew up on the west side, played sandlot ball with him, played with his brothers, and you know, he just remembered that Pete had the same attitude at the sandlot. HE SAID HE JUST PLAYED COMPLETELY LIKE WE SEE THE HEAD SLIDE HERE FIRST. AND THAT WAS PETE ROSE. And that's how he will be remembered in this city. LIVE COVERAGE BRIAN HAMRICK WLWT NEWS FIVE. BRIAN, THANK YOU. And of course we can also see people behind Brian passing the statue. WE WILL CONTINUE MOVING AHEAD. ABOUT REMEMBERING PETE ROSE'S LEGACY HERE IN CINCINNATI. Take a look at our archive. THE POWERS FOR THE HIT KING EVERYWHERE ON OUR WEBSITE, WLWT.COM. LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR WEATHER FORECAST. We are indeed having a gloomy, gray day, but there are even better days ahead. BETTER DAYS AHEAD. IT'S GOING TO BE A REALLY NICE FORECAST once we get that cold front coming through. This also reduces the humidity. YES, IT WILL LOWER THE HUMIDITY GOOD MORNING. I think I'll probably need a few jackets to get started tomorrow morning. So we will see a big change in temperatures. HOW IT FEELS OUTSIDE. AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF VERY HUMIDITY WE WILL GO BACK INTO THE SUNSHINE. RIGHT NOW our radar shows dry skies, but regional visibility shows a cold front to the west. You can see it coming from Chicago. Here's a small portion of the shower activity that there isn't much to see. I think there's a chance of a few showers throughout the afternoon, especially this evening, but a lot of us are here just looking at the cloud cover as we walk around today. CURRENTLY IT'S 72 DEGREES, 69, IN LOVELAND AND MORROW MASON'S AT 67, AND WE HAVE ABOUT 69 TO 68 FROM ERLANGER TO UNION, RIGHT NOW TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE THE 275 CIRCLES ARE IN THE UPPER 60S AND SOUTHEASTERN INDIANA, AROUND 70S IN MOUNT HOREB AND IN PEEBLES AND THE HUMIDITY AGAIN, QUITE HIGH. The dew points are medium to high temperatures. It's definitely more of a sticky feeling. As a result, youth sports could experience a patchy rain after school today. The warmest time of the day will be around 3 p.m., with a high of 78°. And then we'll see a few showers in the evening. TEMPERATURES OF APPROXIMATELY 74°C. WE WILL TALK ABOUT THE GLADING TONIGHT AND BETTER WEATHER FOR THE FALL INTO THE NEW WEEK. COME KELLY AND STEPHEN, THANK YOU KATIE.
