An unusual snowstorm shocked South African citizens last week. With major highways closed and people stuck in their homes, a thick blanket of snow has brought the country to a standstill.

A lion sanctuary has released videos of its cat residents' reactions to the incredible snowstorm. In a video shared by GG Conservation on Instagram, the big cats can be seen walking on snow-covered ground.

The animals seem mostly unconcerned about the snow, but some of them seem confused as the white flakes fall from the sky. “This is Luna and Snowdrop enjoying this new white stuff that we almost never get to see. “Mother Nature can do whatever she wants, wherever she wants,” reads the caption of one of the videos.

Snow is not a common occurrence in South Africa, but it is rare. There are even a few ski resorts in the country, although they are not functional.

Suzanne Scott of GG Conservation, who recorded the lions' reactions to the snow, said the animals were not bothered by the unusual weather but were “intrigued and cautious” at the “novel stuff that was falling from the sky”.

“Unusually heavy spring snowfall in South Africa, so for the first time ever we were able to film the lions in deep snow,” she told Yahoo News.

“Lions can handle anything”

On Instagram, the conservation group said the big cats were “survivors and warriors” who can handle anything, adding that the lions were happy and roaring through the snowstorm. “It was really interesting to see new behaviors in the lions. Who used their shelters and who didn't. Who seemed to love it.”

and who looked uncomfortable,” reads another post.

The snow has now disappeared. “We are now back to normal, the snow disappeared as quickly as it came,” said one post, returning the lions to their normal environment.
