World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz defeated No. 1 Jannik Sinner 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the China Open final in Beijing on Wednesday and he did so in dramatic fashion.

After losing the first set in a tiebreak, Alcaraz won the second set and then took the third to a tiebreak as well. Trailing 1-3 in the third set tiebreak, Alcaraz covered the entire court several times to win a crucial point:

That point seemed to shift the momentum significantly in the Spaniard's favor as he scored seven points in a row and won the game after falling behind 3-0 in the tiebreak.

Per José Morgado from Portugal RecordThe win gave Alcaraz its fourth title of 2024 and improved its record against Sinner this year to 3-0:

While Alcaraz suffered a disappointing second-round exit at the US Open over the summer, Wednesday's victory suggests he is back on track and playing his best tennis towards the end of the year.

For Alcaraz, Wednesday was the first China Open title of his young career, and he also defeated the defending champion when Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev in the 2023 China Open final.

The 2024 season was a standout year for the 21-year-old, notable for the French Open and Wimbledon titles, bringing his career total of Grand Slam singles titles to four. He also won a silver medal in men's singles at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Sinner had a spectacular year himself, rising to world No. 1 and winning the first two Grand Slam singles titles of his career at the Australian Open and the US Open.

The momentum seemed to be entirely on the Italian's side heading into the China Open, as he went the distance at the US Open, defeating American Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the final.

In comparison, Alcaraz lost in the second round to Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-1, 7-5, 6-4, ending his tournament much earlier than anyone could have expected.

Maybe the loss shouldn't have been so surprising given Alcaraz said He played the “worst match” of his career with a loss to veteran Gael Monfils at the Cincinnati Open in August, just a week before the start of the US Open.

Alcaraz's problems from Cincinnati carried over to New York City, but whatever they were now seem to have evaporated after his victory over Sinner in Beijing.

Now Alcaraz is back in top form at this week's Shanghai Masters, where he will face China's Juncheng Shang in the round of 64.
