Lincoln man arrested after $27,000 worth of stolen property found in storage unit

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A Lincoln man was arrested after a series of burglaries in southeast Lancaster County in which over $38,000 worth of property was stolen.

Lancaster County Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said six burglaries and two thefts have been reported in the last week and a half. Houchin said lawn mowers, tools, ladders and expensive patio furniture were stolen from properties including unlocked garages and outbuildings.

Officers executed a search warrant Monday and recovered more than $27,000 in stolen property from a storage unit rented by 29-year-old Jacob Peterson. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

According to the sheriff's office, Peterson has a criminal history, including a previous arrest for burglary.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed.

“Jacob’s arrest prevented many more people from becoming victims,” Houchin said.

Houchin said Peterson was identified through surveillance video and physical evidence.

The sheriff's office urged residents to take precautions to avoid becoming victims by using outdoor lighting, security cameras, alarm systems and securing property.

“No one deserves to be a victim, but you can help yourself not to be one,” Houchin said.
