Rich homie Quan died of an accidental drug overdose containing fentanyl and codeine

Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan died of an accidental drug overdose in Georgia last month, authorities said.

The artist, who burst onto the hip-hop scene more than a decade ago, was killed by the “combined toxic effects of fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine and promethazine,” the Fulton County coroner said in a statement to NBC News Wednesday.

According to the medical examiner, the cause of death was an accident.

On September 5, the coroner said in a statement that Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta had notified its staff of the rapper's death.

Rich Homie Quan, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, was 33 years old.

He had a big hit more than a decade ago with the song “Type of Way”. “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” followed in 2015.

Rich Homie Quan opened up about his drug use on the hip-hop podcast My Expert Opinion.

On the podcast, he talked about how heavily he used drugs after his 2013 hit “Type of Way.” At first, he said his drug use started with how often he was performing and staying up late.

He began using the street drug ecstasy, known as Molly, and drinking Lean, a mix of codeine cough syrup and soda.

“I was with Molly every day. Geeked up,” he said. “I feel like I couldn't do a show or a song without being on Molly.” He later said on the podcast: “I was lost in the sauce.”

In 2014, Rich Homie Quan was named rap publication XXL's coveted first freshman class, Variety reported. Other names mentioned by the magazine include Chance the Rapper, Ty Dolla $ign and Kevin Gates.

Throughout his career, he has been nominated for multiple BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best New Artist and the People's Champion Award, Variety reported.
