Due to a Bank of America failure, some account balances are at $0

A Bank of America outage has caused some accounts to show a $0 balance.

According to Downdetector, the outage began around 9:30 a.m. PST on Wednesday; 45 minutes later, over 20,000 user complaints were logged. Numerous Bank of America customers have since posted screenshots of empty balances.

“All my accounts suddenly show $0.00,” one user wrote on Twitter/X.

“Five accounts have a zero balance, over 20,000! I was on hold for 30 minutes and they removed the chat feature,” another user wrote on Downdetector.

The outage also appears to have trapped Zelle, the digital payments network that Bank of America runs along with other banks. “I tried to make a Zelle payment and realized there were insufficient funds,” one user wrote on Reddit. Others report that Bank of America's website issued a warning that it could not retrieve the user's balance.

Bank of America did not immediately respond to a request for comment, making the cause of the outage unclear. Meanwhile, yesterday's account balances are displayed on the company's website. “Please log in again later to check your current balance,” the company’s website says.

According to Downdetector, many Bank of America customers are regaining access to the bank's website and app, which has led to a decrease in outage reports. Others say the disruption didn't stop them from paying with their bank accounts.

“It's just a display error. I just spoke to an agent and confirmed my account balance. Relax everyone,” another user wrote on Downdetector.
