Benfica vs Atlético Madrid: Champions League result, statistics and updates

Conor Gallagher conceded a penalty as Benfica beat Atletico Madrid to continue their perfect start to this season's Champions League.

Kerem Akturkoglu gave the Portuguese the lead in Lisbon with a confident finish in the 13th minute.

Four minutes after being substituted as part of a triple half-time substitution, a video referee check (VAR) concluded that Atlético's Gallagher had caught Benfica player Vangelis Pavlidis in the penalty area.

Former Real Madrid striker Angel Di Maria duly converted from the penalty spot.

England midfielder Gallagher, who moved to Atlético from Chelsea this summer, had his evening made even worse when he was beaten to the ball by Alexander Bah from a Benfica corner and headed in the hosts' third goal in the 75th minute.

Orkun Kokcu scored the fourth goal from the penalty spot after a serious foul by Reinildo Mandava.

Pavlidis was on the post for the home team just before half-time, while Atlético, trailing 1-0 in the first half, hit the crossbar with a failed cross from Samuel Lino.

Benfica narrowly beat Red Star Belgrade 2-1 in their Champions League opener last month. Atletico had defeated RB Leipzig with the same result.
