Authorities: IN father and son charged with drug offenses

Charles Simpson, 61, and Justin Simpson, 36, are charged with drug offenses, including conspiracy to traffic an incarcerated person.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A father and son from Scottsburg, Indiana, are in prison after police accused them of trying to smuggle drugs at a construction site for detainees on Sept. 20.

Authorities said Scott County Sheriff's Department Deputy Tim Applegate was with an incarcerated Inmate Trustee Program work crew when he noticed someone “circling the area.” Applegate then observed the individual enter and exit a restroom near the construction site before quickly leaving the area.

After calling for help on scene, investigators said Applegate and the other officers found controlled substances in the bathroom.

Investigators identified the individual as 61-year-old Charles Simpson and determined that he allegedly planned the “drug drop” with his son, 36-year-old Justin Simpson, who worked at Applegate.

A Scott County sheriff's detective later arrested Charles. He is charged with conspiracy to have intercourse with a person in custody, conspiracy to traffic in marijuana, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of paraphernalia.

Authorities said they removed Justin from the Inmate Trustee Program and he is charged with conspiracy to traffic an incarcerated person and conspiracy to traffic marijuana.
