BREAKING NEWS: Garden Theater is closing doors at Winter Garden

The Garden Theater has officially announced its closure in downtown Winter Garden.

The theater has been an integral part of the community since it opened in 1935 and again after many years of closure when it reopened in 2008.

Garden Theater officials announced the closure on the organization's website Wednesday, Oct. 2.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Garden Theater Inc. as financial challenges have proven insurmountable,” the website reads. “Despite our best efforts to continue to provide a space for creativity, community and the performing arts, we can no longer meet the operating costs and requirements necessary to keep our doors open.”

The theater's interior, built in 1935 in the Mediterranean Revival style, was modeled on a Spanish courtyard, with Romeo and Juliet balconies, a Spanish tile roof, and a dark blue ceiling dotted with stars.

The theater underwent several renovations until its closure in 1963, falling victim to the popularity of television.

The city of Winter Garden purchased the building in 2002 and turned restoration work over to the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation.

The combined effort of the two organizations culminated in the successful reopening of the Garden Theater in February 2008 with a gala performance featuring local talent and Broadway star Davis Gaines of “Phantom of the Opera” fame.

“Since 2008, the Garden Theater has been a haven for artists, performers and audiences alike,” the website continues. “We are proud to nurture local talent, bring stories to life and foster connections through the power of live theater. It goes without saying that the performing arts make a huge contribution to a community's quality of life. Unfortunately, recent costs and challenges are increasing.” Times, including significant government budget cuts, have severely impacted our ability to secure the funding necessary to sustain our mission.

“Garden Theater has been an important part of the West Orange community for 16 years,” the post said. “We are so grateful to everyone who has supported us over the years – our audiences, donors, volunteers and artists. Your commitment and passion have been the heartbeat of this theater and we are honored to have been part of this community for so long.” Even though the final curtain has fallen, the memories, friendships and artistic achievements we shared will live on . Thank you for being part of our story and for letting Garden Theater be part of your story.
