SEE IT: Huge bull moose stares at man before dramatically charging

A man near Allagash, Maine, had a brush with death last month when he encountered a huge bull elk that stared at him before charging at him – and it was all caught on camera.

Caleb Lewis posted the video online and said he was “extremely lucky to escape with just a few bumps and bruises” after the moose attacked him.

According to Lewis, the bull elk was one of three elk competing for the affection of a cow elk in the area.

The video begins with a large moose walking through the forest with what looks like a 16-point rack, keeping an eye on Lewis.

The moose appeared to be a gentle giant as it approached, its big brown eyes trained on Lewis. At one point he even appeared to tilt his head slightly toward Lewis.

The elk peered through the narrow trunks of a handful of trees, never taking his eyes off Lewis.

The moose then made a 180-degree turn and began walking the other way, with its eyes still on Lewis.

After about 40 seconds, the moose took a step toward Lewis.

“That’s close enough, buddy,” Lewis said. “That’s close enough.”

The moose continued to stare as Lewis told him again that he was close enough.

“Get out of here. Go,” Lewis said to the moose.

The moose just stared and eventually licked its mouth.

Then he turned his head to Lewis. Suddenly the camera caught the moose charging towards Lewis and he was heard shouting a few unintelligible sentences before the camera turned off.

Lewis told Fox News Digital it was the first time he had encountered this particular moose in the area.

“We usually give them a name when we find a few pairs of shed antlers in a row,” he said.

Lewis said he hasn't named this moose yet.

Lewis also said he encounters elk almost daily in northern Maine, and 99% of the time they flee in the opposite direction to what you imagine as a human.

“This is the closest I’ve come to a live moose and I’ve never been charged before,” he said. “I think he was so full of testosterone (it's breeding season) that he didn't care what I was. He just wanted to keep me away from his cow.”
