Child dies in bus accident

A child riding a bicycle in Madison has died after being hit by a bus. It happened after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Cobblestone Drive and Rockwood Drive, police said. According to Madison police, the injured 8-year-old girl was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson. In addition to police, Madison County Fire Department, Pafford EMS and the school district responded. The cause of the crash remains unknown. Her identity will be withheld until next of kin are notified. The Madison County School District released a statement following news of the child's death that said, in part, “Additional counselors will be on site Thursday and in the coming days to provide support” to Madison students and staff Avenue Upper Elementary and Madison Avenue Elementary. We encourage parents to contact their child's school counselor's office for additional resources or support to help their children during this difficult time. The school district also said there were children on the bus. They were put on another bus or picked up by their parents. None of these students were injured.
