Humboldt man arrested on federal charges | News, sports, jobs

Nathan Nickless

HUMBOLDT – A Humboldt County man wanted by federal authorities was arrested Wednesday after a nearly month-long search.

Nathan Nickless, 39, was wanted on federal drug and weapons charges, as well as state charges related to a July 2024 vehicle pursuit in Pocahontas County.

Federal authorities began searching for Nickless in early September when he failed to show up for his trial date.

On September 28, a Humboldt County deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle believed to be driven by Nickless. He failed to stop for the deputy and led police on a pursuit through Humboldt until he abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot.

According to Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger, multiple law enforcement agencies conducted an extensive search at multiple locations throughout the Humboldt area on Wednesday. Around 2 p.m., officers found Nickless hiding in an upstairs closet at his last known residence, 110 Fifth St. N. in Dakota City. He was arrested without incident, transferred to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and transported to Sioux City where he will remain pending his initial appearance.

As a result of the investigation, Jessica Nelson, 42, also of 110 Fifth St. N in Dakota City, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact and interference with official acts. Nelson was booked into the Humboldt County Jail, where she will remain until her first appearance before the judge.

The United States Marshals Service, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Iowa State Patrol and the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office assisted in the investigation.
