Victim and suspect dead after shooting spree ends on I-190

Both sides of a busy highway were closed for several hours Wednesday after a series of shootings in Worcester, Massachusetts, that left both the victim and suspect dead. Officers were dispatched to Heroult Road for the first reported shooting around 2:20 p.m., police said in a statement. Grace and Kennedy Piekos said they were getting off the school bus when they heard banging noises and saw a man running away. Other witnesses said a wounded man was pulled from bushes in the area and loaded into an ambulance. Yellow crime scene tape could be seen surrounding a white house and police officers meeting outside. Police confirmed a victim was found in the area with serious injuries. The man brandished a firearm and fired a round. “The officer ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he fled,” Worcester police said. At approximately 3:24 p.m., Worcester officers and Massachusetts State Police were dispatched to the northbound side of Interstate 190, about a quarter-mile from Heroult Road, in response to a report of an armed man stopping traffic. “Worcester police officers and Massachusetts State Police troopers arrived on scene and pursued the man on foot on the highway. “The man tried to attack drivers on the highway,” police said. Ali Impomeni said a man with a gun came within 5 feet of her car on I-190. “When he got to my car, we heard gunshots, but they were from the police,” she said. A Worcester officer and a state trooper fired their weapons during the incident, officials said. Police confirmed the suspect shot himself and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Sky5 flew over the highway and saw numerous police and emergency vehicles on the road. Caution tape was posted on both sides of the highway and a line of officers walked across the street, seemingly searching for evidence. “At this time, we believe the man from the I-190 incident is the suspect in the Heroult Road incident. There is no danger to the public at this time,” police wrote. The highway reopened around 7:30 p.m., Worcester police said. They are also asking anyone with video evidence of the shooting to submit a copy online.
