Xfinity is working to restore remaining Lowcountry service following the fiber interruption

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Xfinity says it is working to restore services to a small number of Lowcountry customers who remained offline Wednesday following a fiber outage Tuesday afternoon.

Xfinity spokeswoman Amanda Verdin said the disruption occurred on a route from Augusta, Georgia, to Charleston as a non-Comcast crew was clearing debris during storm recovery.

The company said in a statement Wednesday that as of 6:30 a.m., most customers should be back online.

However, customers across the Lowcountry from Walterboro to Charleston to Mount Pleasant reported that their service, whether internet or television, was still not fully functioning until late in the morning.

Verdin said that after a closer examination of the network, the company was able to identify additional outages. She said less than 1% of customers are still affected by outages, but that teams from across the country are in the Lowcountry to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and are working as quickly as possible to address remaining issues solve.

She said the company thanks the community for their patience as the work continues.

“We apologize for the inconvenience last night and want to thank our technicians, utility workers and first responders who worked tirelessly to get people back connected as quickly as possible,” Verdin said in a statement.

The website Downdetector has seen an increase in reported outages since around 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday. Most complaints concern internet services, the website says.

Verdin directed customers with billing inquiries to call Xfinity at 1-800-XFINITY.
