Google is testing Gemini-powered video search in India

Google announced at its Google for India event that it is currently experimenting with Gemini-based video search in India. This feature allows users to record a small snippet and ask Gemini questions about it.

Users who would participate in this experiment will be able to use this feature in Google Lens. Video search capabilities are currently limited to English-language searches on mobile devices.

The company said users would need to opt-in to the AI Overviews and More section of the Google Search Labs Experiments Program. However, no video length limits have been set when using video search.

Google first announced this feature in English at GoogleIO earlier this year for US-based users.

Google is driving multimodal search in India as more and more people can use voice or video as a communication medium. The company said more than 40% of Indian-speaking Gemini users in the country chat with the assistant in voice mode. The search company added that India is the largest user base for Google Lens on a monthly basis.

The company first introduced the ability to search by combining photos and text in 2021 to save people the trouble of typing in difficult-to-describe objects. In 2022, Google brought multimodal search functionality to India.
