  • Queens Woman Sentenced for Stabbing Immigration Lawyer

Queens, NY – Xiaoning Zhang was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of immigration attorney Jim Li. The announcement was made by Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. Li was a prominent figure in his activism, particularly during the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989.

District Attorney Katz explained that Li initially took on Zhang's case on a pro bono basis for her asylum application. Zhang admitted to falsifying information in her application, which led Li to terminate his representation.

This dismissal led to Zhang returning to Li's office armed with two kitchen knives and stabbing him, resulting in his death.

Zhang, a 27-year-old fromkissena Boulevard in Flushing, was convicted by a jury last month. She was charged with second-degree murder, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree menacing, obstruction of breathing or blood circulation and second-degree harassment. Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth C. Holder announced the sentence.

The jury heard testimony that Zhang caused a disturbance in Li's office on March 11, 2022 because she was asked to remove her protest picture from the internet. After Li admitted lying on her asylum application, he decided to stop practicing law.
