2 dead after a series of violent incidents across Worcester on Wednesday

A chaotic scene unfolded in Worcester on Wednesday afternoon. It began when a man killed another man and ended when the man turned the gun on himself after shooting at Massachusetts State Police troopers on Interstate 190.

Worcester Police were notified of a potential gunshot victim at an address on Heroult Road around 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday. Arriving officers found a man with serious injuries after he was shot, the department said in a Facebook post. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital.

“A short time later,” a state police officer approached a man who was acting suspiciously. The man then pulled out a gun and fired a round, the statement said.

The police officer ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he fled.

About an hour after the initial call, at approximately 3:24 p.m., Worcester police were dispatched to northbound I-190, not far from Heroult Road. There they found a man stopping traffic on the highway and pointing a gun at motorists, the statement said.

Worcester police officers and state police officers pursued the man on foot as he attempted to carjack motorists on the highway, police said. “In response to the man’s imminent threat,” a Worcester police officer and a state police trooper fired their weapons. The man then turned the gun on himself, the statement said.

The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Worcester police believe the man responsible for the attempted highway carjackings is the same man responsible for the fatal shooting on Heroult Road.

Police are asking anyone with video of the incident or information about it to call police at 508-799-8651.

The incident remains under investigation.
