Detroit bus driver is sentenced after striking and killing a second pedestrian

A Detroit Department of Transportation bus driver accused of striking and killing a person crossing the street last year will hear her sentencing Thursday.

Geraldine Johnson struck and killed Janice Bauer as she crossed Griswold in June 2023.

Johnson was charged with traffic violations resulting in death. She pleaded no contest to the charges in August.

Bauer's family was in disbelief when they learned this wasn't the first time Johnson had been involved in a fatal accident.

Prior to this incident, the former Detroit Department of Transportation bus driver was involved in numerous other accidents, including a fatal crash in 2015. She had been driving a bus for 26 years, a DDOT news release said.

Johnson struck and killed another person, Joey Davis, in 2015.

“It didn't have to happen. That bus driver shouldn’t have been driving that day,” Linda Bauer said earlier this year.
