Former Cape Girardeau city councilman faces drug and weapons charges

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – Former Cape Girardeau City Councilman Rhett Pierce is now facing federal drug and weapons charges.

According to U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Patrick James, marshals arrested Pierce on Thursday morning, Oct. 3, in Cape Girardeau after a grand jury indicted him on Tuesday.

Pierce is charged with two counts of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and unlawful use of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm.

James says Pierce will make his first appearance in federal court Thursday at 2:15 p.m.

Pierce is also charged, with James saying he will plead not guilty.

Pierce is in federal custody.

A bail hearing is scheduled in the coming days.

Pierce was arrested Sept. 27 in Cape Girardeau on drug trafficking and illegal weapons possession charges. A few days later, he resigned from the Cape Girardeau City Council.
