Man convicted of killing off-duty sheriff's deputy

IT'S RIDICULOUS. AND THEN FIRST CLOSURE. This is exactly what is intentional. AS WE SEEN THE VIDEOS, WE SAW EVERYTHING. I just don't understand it. I honestly don't understand it. SHORTLY AFTER THE VERDICT WAS ANNOUNCED, DEPUTY RYAN DEMBY'S SISTER SAID SHE WAS ANGRY AND HAPPY. HIS MOTHER expressed deep sadness. THERE ARE NO WORDS. What I feel for my child cannot be expressed in words. I just miss him. Um, was it upsetting that the jury didn't find first or second degree murder? More like homicide? Or is it just the whole case itself? EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING? RYAN WAS THE YOUNGEST OF THEIR FOUR CHILDREN. She said he went to Calvert Hall, was a senior in college and wanted to be a golf professional. What would he do that day if he were playing golf here? He played golf, yes. Instead, at age 23, he was shot and killed by 41-year-old Jewel Crowder outside a bar in Federal Hill last September. A jury said today it found him guilty of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, rejecting the state's push for a first-degree murder conviction and buying, at least in part, the defense story. CROWDER testified at the trial and told the jury that he acted in defense of his friend and Bowser Justin Lee, a defense witness who attended the trial along with Crowder supporters. Any reactions to the verdicts this morning? We have nothing to say. BUT THANK YOU. NO IMMEDIATE COMMENT FROM PROSECUTORS, BUT WE HAVE SPOKEN WITH DEFENSE ATTORNEY ROLAND HARRIS. You were hoping there wouldn't be any culprits down the line, but you testified that he fired, it was his gun. He fired the bullets. He talked about why. So yes, I respect the jury's verdict. RIGHT. THIS IS MY COMMENT. The verdict of the prospective jury. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. JEWELL CROWDER now faces a total maximum sentence of 35 years in prison. The first five are not eligible for parole. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 3 in CUMMINGS COURT

Crowder faced a maximum total sentence of 35 years in prison. A jury ultimately sentenced Crowder to 20 years in prison on Thursday, rejecting the state's murder argument and embracing the defense theory that Crowder acted out of fear. According to video, there was no dispute during the trial about Crowder shooting Demby and testimony from the defendant himself, who told the jury he fired his gun to defend others, his “good friend,” bouncer Justin Lee. During his testimony, Lee said he was not afraid. Charging documents obtained by 11 News show seven shell casings were found at the scene and Demby was shot seven times in the back. Witness statements and security video helped identify Crowder as a suspect before his arrest. This report will be updated.
