Father of boy accused of killing Federales employee arrested

A 14-year-old boy was arrested outside a Denver bar in connection with the killing of Todd Kidd in July.

DENVER – The father of a teenager charged in the killing of a bar employee in downtown Denver has been arrested on an accessory after the fact crime charge.

Todd Kidd was shot while working at Federales at 29th and Larimer streets on July 10 and died a few days later.

A 14-year-old boy was identified as a suspect in the shooting and was eventually arrested in Casper, Wyoming. 9NEWS is not releasing the boy's name due to his age.

The boy's father, Steven Marquez, was arrested last week on charges of aiding and abetting a felony and attempting to influence a public official.

According to a probable cause statement for his arrest, police called Marquez and told him his son was wanted for murder. During the phone call, Marquez said he last saw his son on July 11, which was the day after the shooting but the day before Kidd died, the statement said.

Later in the call, the document states, Marquez said he would ask his son to turn him in. He said he had to pick him up from Thornton and hung up. This detective determined that Marquez knew where his son was based on these statements.

The detective waited until 10 p.m. for Marquez to show up with his son, but he never arrived or called to make further arrangements.

On the afternoon of July 14, Marquez called the detective and said he would turn his son over the next day, but only after the boy spoke to the media. He told the detective there was video of the incident “that the world needs to see,” the PC statement said.

Marquez also posted on social media the facts of the incident and indicated that he had been in contact with his son about the incident, the document said.

The detective obtained a search warrant for Marquez's phone and began receiving pings for his location. That data showed the device traveling north on Interstate 25 and into Wyoming.

It stayed in Casper for about an hour before heading back to Colorado.

Investigators monitored Marquez and determined what vehicle he was driving. Through a license plate database, they found he was driving in the Thornton area the evening he said he had to pick up his son, the PC statement said.

Investigators identified a relative of Marquez who lived in Casper and determined he had been in contact with that person. The boy was taken into custody in Casper on the evening of July 16. It was determined that he and another unidentified person had apparently shaved their heads to disguise themselves since the shooting, the PC statement said.
