Johnson County is partnering with Table to Table to help combat food insecurity

A farm in eastern Iowa is partnering with food banks to help combat growing food insecurity.

Cultivation: Johnson County is a five-acre farm in Iowa City that grows high-quality produce for food hubs in Johnson County.

They work with Table to Table to help distribute the fall harvest, such as:

  • Carrots
  • Melons
  • potatoes
  • Squeeze

Jason Grimm, executive director of Iowa Valley RC&D, said Iowa food banks are dealing with record demand and just want to help.

“Since the program began, we have trained a total of over 16 apprentices,” said Grimm. “Some of them have started their own farms outside of Johnson County, others have also gone into Peace Corps, CoodCorps, AmeriCorps, or better yet, food security positions at the federal or local level.”

Almost £40,000. Each year, 10,000 tons of products are distributed under the program. If you would like to help, you can donate directly to the farm by visiting the Grow: Johnson County homepage.

Grimm said they are also looking for more volunteers to help them harvest and distribute produce several times a week. Volunteering takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from May to November from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

No experience is required. Everyone who volunteers is trained according to Grow’s food safety protocols. You can register as a volunteer by clicking here.
