Wausau man pleads guilty to beating woman during domestic violence

WAUSAU — A 36-year-old Wausau man charged with attempted murder of a woman during a domestic disturbance pleaded guilty to reduced charges Thursday.

Donald E. Warren was charged with attempted first-degree premeditated murder as a domestic violence incident. On Thursday, Marathon County Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Vechinski filed a revised criminal complaint charging Warren with two counts of aggravated assault as an incident of domestic violence, two counts of strangulation and one count each of false imprisonment and negligently endangering safety was charged with felony battery and misdemeanor battery.

Warren pleaded guilty to the two counts of aggravated assault and Marathon County Circuit Judge Suzanne O'Neill dismissed the remaining charges but will consider them in sentencing.

According to the criminal complaint, on Oct. 11, a caller reported an injured woman who was believed to be the victim of domestic abuse. An officer contacted the woman and observed “significant” injuries to her face. The woman's right eye was bloodshot and black and blue around the eye. According to the complaint, she had redness around her neck and jaw area and dried blood on her shirt.

According to the complaint, officers found a knife at the top of the home's stairs and dried blood on the kitchen floor, living room and bedding.

The woman said Warren told her to be quiet and then punched her in the face six to eight times, the complaint states. She said he tried to hit her head against the wall and she tried to stop her head from hitting the wall with her arms. An officer saw bruises on both arms.

The woman said Warren strangled her twice and she lost consciousness both times, the complaint says. Her teeth were loose because of the blows to her face. Warren also stabbed the woman in the stomach with a knife, leaving a 1-by-2-inch wound, the complaint states. The woman said she had blurred vision and hearing problems.
