Europa League Matchday 1 results, winners and losers: Jose Mourinho, Roma, Man United and more.

The first matchday of the 2024-25 UEFA Europa League took place over the last two days and brought some surprising results as Manchester United drew with Twente at Old Trafford, while Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham beat Qarabag 3-0 in their first home game of the European season won. Here are the winners and losers of the round:

Winner: Jose Mourinho

The Portuguese coach started his Europa League campaign well as Fenerbahce won 2-1 against Union Saint-Gilloise. Mourinho's team showed a positive performance and scored two goals with the defenders. Leading player Caglar Söyüncü and Christian Burgess's own goal in front of Ross Sykes' goal before the final whistle gave the guests reason to celebrate. Mourinho's side needed a win to respond to their disappointing 3-1 defeat to Galatasaray in last weekend's Istanbul derby.

Winner: Lazio

Marco Baroni's side won 3-0 against Dynamo Kiev, convincing many after a good win thanks to a brace from former Salernitana player Boulaye Dia and a goal from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. The Biancocelesti have had a challenging summer with major changes as former key players Luis Alberto, Felipe Anderson and captain Ciro Immobile left the club, while Baroni replaced former coach Igor Tudor, who replaced Maurizio Sarri at the end of March. A new cycle has begun for the former Verona coach this season and despite initial problems, it appears he is gradually figuring things out after a solid European debut.

Loser: Manchester United

Erik ten Hag's side are favorites to win the tournament, but things aren't looking good after a 1-1 draw against Twente in the competition's opening game. Despite Christian Eriksen's opening goal, the away team managed to equalize at Old Trafford with Sam Lammers showing once again that this team cannot be consistent throughout the season.

Winner: Ivan Juric

The 1-1 draw against Athletic Club was not the result he wanted considering the Spanish team only scored their goal in the final minutes of the game at the Stadio Olimpico, but new AS Roma coach Ivan Juric can quite happy with his first two games after replacing former captain and icon Daniele De Rossi. Under his leadership, the Giallorossi beat Udinese 3-0 on Sunday and then drew with Ernesto Valverde's Athletic, one of the best teams in the competition. A good start that can bring a smile to the future for the Croatian coach.

Loser: Radu Dragusin

Despite Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham 3-0 home win against Qarabag, former Genoa player Radu Dragusin was sent off seven minutes into the game. Dragusin is the first player to be sent off on his debut in a major European competition for Tottenham, while his seventh-minute red card is the earliest for Spurs since the start of a major European game.
