School bus in Crown Point crashes head-on, no students on board

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, a Crown Point school bus crashed head-on into a Ford Edge SUV in the 3300 block of West 133rd Avenue on Thursday morning.

According to police, there were no students on the bus at the time of the accident.

Officials said a preliminary investigation revealed the bus was traveling west on 133rd when it veered off the road northbound, struck a mailbox and went left of the center of the road into the path of oncoming traffic.

It is believed the driver of the Ford tried to avoid an accident, but both vehicles collided.

The bus driver and a bus attendant were the only people on the bus at the time of the accident.

The driver of the SUV was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. The bus driver was taken to a local medical facility for evaluation. An observer was released from the scene.

The cause of this accident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit.
