The Texas police chief and CBP agent was injured in an accident while pursuing a man who sped through the border checkpoint

A Texas police chief and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer were injured in a high-speed pursuit of a man going through a checkpoint and later arrested after an hours-long standoff at a camp.

The wild chase began around 5:45 a.m. Thursday after the suspect, 30-year-old Robert Michael Stuart, was stopped at a border checkpoint in Duval County.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, agents asked Stuart to go to the second checkpoint to investigate further, but instead he accelerated, prompting agents to give chase.

According to KIIITV, Freer Police Chief Rolando Flores joined the pursuit and T-Bone Border Patrol Agent Manuel Perez joined the pursuit as Perez turned off Highway 44 toward US 59 in Encinal.

Flores was taken to Sphon Hospital with a dislocated finger and a possible broken wrist. Perez was flown to Sphon Shoreline in Corpus Christi with a broken shoulder and remains hospitalized, the outlet reported.

“And in an instant my life would have changed,” Flores wrote in a social media post after the crash.

“I thank God for watching over us… thankful to be alive is an understatement. We continue to pray for the other agent involved,” he added.

Meanwhile, DPS troopers tracked Stuart and saw him enter a storage unit in Calallen, the northwest part of Corpus Christi, according to KRISTV.

When they arrived, DPS detectives said the suspect switched vehicles and immediately locked himself in the storage unit, leading to a lengthy standoff with law enforcement.

Eventually the DPS SWAT team was called in. They used a battering ram to force open the unit, then threw a stun grenade inside and took Stuart from Robson into custody.

Stuart will be transported back to Duval County where he will be charged with evading arrest with a motor vehicle and causing bodily harm.

Law enforcement at the scene initially told KIIITV that migrants were involved in the chase, but now say the information has not been confirmed. The Post has reached out to Texas DPS for confirmation.
