Mets slugger trash talks Brewers while running bases — and doesn't stop there (UPDATE)

UPDATE: Brewers shortstop Willy Adames explained the incident to reporters after the loss.

And Mets designated hitter Jesse Winker said Adames' words don't add up.

Jesse Winker's greatest success as a New York Mets player came with a little attitude Tuesday in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

With the Mets trailing 2-0 in the second inning, Winker hit a triple down the right field line, scoring two runs and tying the game.

As Winker approached second base, he chirped in the direction of Brewers shortstop Willy Adames. Although he stopped running at third base, his trash talk didn't end there. The Mets' designated hitter celebrated by facing his teammates and then spent the time walking third base and mouthing off Adames, who appeared to retaliate.

The ESPN broadcast discussed the interaction over the next few innings, but there were few answers.

Play-by-play announcer Boog Sciambi asked Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich about it during an in-game interview at the end of the third period. Yelich remained unmoved.

“I’ll let you figure it out,” Yelich said. “You know her well. You can decipher that. You can see for yourself what’s going on out there.”

Winker spent the 2023 season with the Brewers and fell well short of expectations. He had a .199 average, a .567 OPS and one home run in 61 games (197 plate appearances).

On September 27, Winker was drilled by Brewers starter Frankie Montas' pitch, which SNY announcer Ron Darling described as “intentional.”

Brewers fans at American Family Field hailed Winker as he faced starter Freddy Peralta in the second and fourth innings on Tuesday.

Via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Winker, who is a great guy by the way and was dealing with offseason surgery last year, took two puzzling postseason blows at this stage of the tournament, and Milwaukee apparently hasn't forgotten that. He initially performed excellently for Washington this year and then moved to the Mets at the trade deadline.

To make matters worse for the Brewers, Winker scored on Starling Marte's sacrifice fly to give the Mets a brief 3-2 lead.
