A massive 800,000 liters of water have been saved every day in Wexford this year with the discovery of 70 major leaks across the county.

The daily water savings are so significant that in the first half of this year alone, the daily needs of over 6,000 people could be met. This represents the combined daily consumption in Courtown, Kilmuckridge, Oylegate and Kilmore Quay.

Dave Murphy, Leakage Reduction Program Manager at Uisce Éireann, described the findings as “some of the largest water savings in the country so far this year.”

“It is difficult to understand that more than 800,000 liters of clean drinking water disappear underground every day,” he said. “Water is a valuable resource that is expensive to extract. Therefore, finding these leaks and successfully repairing them will help ensure more reliable supplies to local communities,” he concluded

Commenting on the success of the repairs, Jim Fitzgerald, Regional Operations Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: “Thanks to this work by Uisce Éireann, together with Shareridge and the water service staff, customers are enjoying a safer and more reliable water supply.” For our leak detection and repair teams, locating and repairing is the priority “These leaks have been a huge success.”

“Securing Wexford’s water supply remains Uisce Éireann’s top priority. Uncovering these leaks is a testament to the expertise and knowledge of our find and fix teams. We hope to continue to use this knowledge in our daily search to locate and repair leaks to further improve the quality of care both in Wexford and across Ireland,” Mr Fitzgerald concluded.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million in upgrading the groundwater network across the country through the implementation of the National Leakage Reduction Program. It will invest a further €250 million each year until the end of 2030 to fix leaks and replace pipes to ensure a more reliable water supply.
