Harlem Rep. Eddie Gibbs taken into custody by NYPD: sources

State Rep. Eddie Gibbs was arrested Thursday for interfering with police as they stopped his brother's car in Manhattan – and later said the incident was “all his fault.”

According to sources, the NYPD's Strategic Response Group stopped the Harlem Democrat's brother for a broken taillight while he was driving near Lexington Avenue and East 117 Street in East Harlem around 1:30 p.m.

After handing over his ID to police, Gibbs – a pal of Mayor Eric Adams – arrived and allegedly told his brother to get out of the car.

But police ordered the driver to stay put while asking the angry politician to stay on the sidewalk, sources said.

Instead, Gibbs allegedly ignored repeated warnings from police – leading to his arrest.

Hours after his arrest, an apologetic Gibbs left the 25th Precinct and admitted to reporters that he had “interrupted an NYPD stop.”

Gibbs, dressed in a sweatshirt and cap, said police “did nothing wrong” during the altercation.

“It was all on my part. I see my brother and sister in the car and they were pulled over and I wanted to know why,” he said.

“When they explained the brake light to me, I went and adjusted the brake, but I shouldn't have done that because the brake was still active.”

This isn't the first time Gibbs has gotten into legal trouble.

He dealt crack cocaine in the late 1980s before being arrested for murder.

Gibbs spent a year in Rikers before negotiating a deal to reduce his charge to manslaughter for a shooting he claimed was in self-defense while his home was being robbed.

In 2022, he was elected to the state legislature as the first person to have served time in prison.

Gibbs was recently accused of illegally firing a former employee as he struggled with a health crisis that resulted in him losing a leg.

Ex-employee Keith Lily alleged in a June lawsuit that Gibbs punished him while he was hospitalized for several weeks.

East Harlem police have close ties to embattled Mayor Eric Adams and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.

Earlier this year, Gibbs managed to fend off a primary challenger backed by powerful Harlem Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) by a margin of about 500 votes.

Heastie helped defend Gibbs during the primaries.

Sources said Gibbs received a disorderly conduct police citation for the episode on Thursday.

He warned New Yorkers to “respect hitchhikers” when speaking outside the station building.

“You know, the officers don't know who they're dealing with,” Gibbs said.

“The officers don’t know who they are pulling aside and I have added to that fear,” he added.

“I was wrong.”
