Parents outraged after teacher misconduct arrest in Lake Mary – WFTV

LAKE MARY, Fla. – Parents who picked up their children from Lake Mary High School on Thursday were shocked to learn that a teacher who also serves as an assistant coach was arrested.

“It’s crazy that someone who is supposed to protect students is indoctrinating them. To harm them,” said Lake Mary High School attendee Ta’ryus Wilkinson.

Many parents told WFTV they learned of Richard Colon's arrest while picking up their children from school.

“The reality is, it is so horrible and heartbreaking. I feel sorry for the people he may have come into contact with, children,” Wilkinson said.

On Thursday, Colon was arrested, taken to the Seminole County Jail and charged with distribution of obscene materials, transmission of information harmful to minors and obscene communication using a computer to entice children.

“I’m glad they found out and got him. It’s crazy that it even happened,” Wilkinson said.

According to the school, Colon was employed as a social studies teacher and assistant coach for the high school girls' soccer team.

According to a release from Seminole County Public Schools, Colon is on administrative leave and the incident was reported to the Department of Family and Children Services and Law Enforcement in accordance with its operating procedures.

The officials said allegations of misconduct were taken seriously and that they would cooperate fully with law enforcement in their investigations.

Colon is currently being held in the Seminole County Jail without bail. His first court appearance is Friday at 2 p.m
