NLDS preview what you should know about series

MILWAUKEE – The rivalry is headed to the playoffs.

After winning their National League Wild Card series against the Brewers in dramatic fashion on Thursday night, the Mets now face the Philadelphia Phillies for the first time in the Major League Baseball playoffs.

The No. 6 seed Mets and second-seeded Phillies will face off in the NL Division Series beginning with Game 1 on Saturday at 4:08 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies are looking to compete in the NL Championship Series for the third straight year, while the Mets have a chance to reach the championship for the first time since 2015.

With a highly anticipated matchup set to begin later this weekend, here's what you need to know for a playoff series between the Mets and Phillies:

Mets vs. Phillies in the regular season

Despite the Phillies' six-game lead over the Mets in the National League East, both teams enjoyed a competitive season that included a dramatic trip to London.

The Mets lost seven of 13 games but won three of four games in the team's final series at Citi Field on the second-to-last weekend in September. The Mets hit Taijuan Walker with four home runs, Brandon Nimmo hit a home run against Zack Wheeler and Francisco Alvarez added five RBI in three wins.

Earlier in the season, the Phillies conceded three of four points against the Mets early in their May swoop, including a blown save by Edwin Diaz and a complete game shutout by Aaron Nola. Two of those games went into extra innings.

The Mets secured a London split in June with a three-run ninth inning and a game-tying double play by Luis Torrens at home plate with the bases loaded in a 6-5 victory.

Zack Wheeler leads the loaded Phillies rotation

Without the quick resurgence of the Brewers' Chris Sale, Zack Wheeler very well would have been the leading candidate for the National League Cy Young.

Wheeler finished the season with 224 strikeouts – tied for the third-most in MLB – over 200 innings, with a record of 16-7 and an ERA of 2.57. The Mets outscored Wheeler by two runs in seven innings on September 22nd for a 2-1 win.
