Man dies after being impaled in truck accident

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT/Gray News) – A man was impaled by a tree trunk in a traffic accident in North Carolina on Wednesday.

The crash occurred on NC 87 near the International Paper mill.

According to the Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Department, a log truck entering the paper mill was struck from behind by a box truck from Fayetteville. A 3-inch diameter log then impaled the driver of the truck and penetrated the left abdominal area.

Recovery teams had to cut the tree trunk with a chainsaw, cut off the roof and peel it away so the pit could be removed. The driver was taken to hospital.

On Thursday, Oct. 3, at 12:30 p.m., the man died at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, according to officials.
