Thanks to Ramapo College students, two brothers have been exonerated of murder charges

Two brothers were released from prison this week after serving 25 years for a murder they did not commit. Thanks to the efforts of Ramapo College, they were relieved.

David and Robert Bintz were convicted in 2000 of a 1987 murder. There was no physical evidence, but they were convicted because a cellmate told police he heard David Bintz admit to the murder while talking in his sleep. As a result, the brothers each received a life sentence.

The Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center at Ramapo College takes a second look at unsolved cases. It took six students just two days to develop a new lead. The genetic evidence pointed not to the Bintz brothers, but to someone who had died years ago. They exhumed the body, conducted a test, and last week the state of Wisconsin confirmed that the person was the real killer.

Thanks to these six students, the brothers are now free.

The students are currently dealing with 53 additional cases.
